About SSC Scientific Assistant IMD Physics 2026

  • The Staff Selection Commission conducts recruitment for Scientific Assistant in the India Meteorological Department (IMD) along with the Junior Engineer Examination 2026, notified on 02 September 2026 (F. No. HQ-C-3019/1/2026-C-3). It is a Group 'B' post in Level-6 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix, Rs. 35,400 – 1,12,400.
  • This is one of the very few central government jobs open to a plain BSc with Physics — a Bachelor's Degree in Science with Physics as one of the subjects is the full educational requirement, with no NET, SET or postgraduate degree needed. Graduates of Computer Science / IT and Electronics / Telecommunication streams are also eligible, but they write different subject papers.
  • Candidates applying for Scientific Assistant must choose exactly one of three subject streams in the online application form — Part-D (Computer Science & IT), Part-E (Electronics & Telecommunication) or Part-F (Physics). BSc Physics graduates opt for Part-F, and that same Part-F paper is then attempted in both Paper-I and Paper-II. The stream once chosen cannot be changed under any circumstances.
  • Online applications run from 02 September 2026 to 22 September 2026 (23:00 hours) on ssc.gov.in, with fee payment up to 23 September 2026 and a correction window from 28 to 30 September 2026. Paper-I is tentatively scheduled for October/November 2026 and Paper-II for December 2026. The total tentative vacancy for the examination is 1748 posts; the post-wise break-up for Scientific Assistant will be released later by the Commission.

Exam pattern

StageCompositionMarks / Duration
Paper-I (CBE) — qualifyingGeneral Intelligence & Reasoning 50 Q + General Awareness 50 Q + Part-F Physics 100 Q (graduation level). Objective MCQs in Hindi and English.200 Marks · 2 Hours (2 hrs 40 min for scribe-eligible candidates) · −0.25 per wrong answer
Paper-II (CBE) — meritPart-F Physics only — 100 objective MCQs of 3 marks each, graduation level. Shortlisted candidates from Paper-I appear here.300 Marks · 2 Hours (2 hrs 40 min for scribe-eligible candidates) · −1 per wrong answer
Minimum qualifying marksApplies to both Paper-I and Paper-IIUR 30% · OBC/EWS 25% · All other categories 20%
Normalisation & meritA separate merit list is drawn for Scientific Assistant in IMD. Marks of Part-D, Part-E and Part-F are normalised by treating them as different shifts. Paper-I is only qualifying; final merit is decided on normalised Paper-II marks alone.—
Document VerificationDocument verification followed by appointment; there is no interview.—

How to prepare

  • Paper-I is only qualifying — 200 questions in 2 hours: General Intelligence & Reasoning (50), General Awareness (50) and Part-F Physics (100), with 0.25 negative marking. Clear it comfortably, but remember your rank does not depend on it.
  • Paper-II decides everything. It is 100 Part-F Physics questions worth 3 marks each (300 marks, 2 hours) with a full 1 mark deducted for every wrong answer — accuracy matters more than attempt count.
  • The Part-F standard is graduation level, so BSc physics core papers are enough: mathematical methods, mechanics, properties of matter, oscillations and waves, optics, electricity and magnetism, kinetic theory and thermodynamics, modern physics, solid state physics, semiconductor devices and analog/digital electronics.
  • Electronics carries real weight in this exam — diodes, BJT configurations, op-amps, Boolean algebra and logic gates are scoring and are often ignored by candidates preparing from an Assistant Professor mindset. Do not skip them.
  • Do not neglect the two general sections in Paper-I. Reasoning and General Awareness together are 100 of the 200 marks and are the fastest way to secure the qualifying cut-off (UR 30%, OBC/EWS 25%, others 20%).
  • A scientific calculator is available on the exam screen for the entire duration of both papers, so practise numericals accordingly. Marks of Part-D, Part-E and Part-F are normalised against each other as if they were separate shifts.
